Assignment
Using the calligraphic hand create a visually pleasing composition using any hand lettered style/form that pre dates the 19th century.
Objectives
Experience the process of hand lettering Develop calligraphic skill in your chosen letterform Research the historical design of illumination, especially in letter spacing and aesthetics Recognize challenges in paper, ink and other media Develop craft skills and presentation techniques
Process
Practice the use of calligraphy by writing the alphabet repeatedly on several 8 ½ x 11” sheet of paper. Include the practice sheets in a new project board on Pinterest.
Research and examine historical examples of your chosen handlettered form. You will find 3-5 examples of your chosen form/style to present to the class. Images from the web can be used. Document the era, style and creators, of your three to five examples via Pinterest and be ready to talk about who they were and how the style was accomplished and used for.
Add your well-practiced calligraphy to your chosen phrase to create a visually dynamic layout, and then begin final lettering. For the final, select a substrate and size appropriate for your composition. Layout page size is unlimited but remember to consider the letterform size limited by each respective pen or brush size. Ink color combinations can be mixed—to add emphasis. Other medias such as paint and metallic leaf can be used to create the illumination but not for the letterforms.
